Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend 2016 Events in Indianapolis!

Indianapolis knows how to do holidays, and Memorial Day is no exception! In fact, Memorial Day Weekend 2016 is one of the biggest weekends of the year for Indianapolis with so many activities and events going on that there is definitely something for everyone! Here is a small sampling of our favorite events that we are sure that you will enjoy, no matter if you are a local or just visiting!
Indiana War Memorial Museum
Where: 431 N Meridian St, Indianapolis
When: 9:00am to 5:00pm on Wednesdays through Sundays
The purpose of Memorial Day is to remember our heroes who paid the ultimate price. Whether you are a long-time Indy resident or a military history buff just passing through, visiting the Indiana War Memorial Museum is one of the top ways to get the most out of your Memorial Day Weekend! This museum features artifacts from every war that the United States has been involved in. One of the most popular exhibits is a gallery dedicated to the legendary USS Indianapolis, which sank in the South Pacific during WWII.
100th Running of the Indianapolis 500
Where: Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 4790 W 16th St, Indianapolis
When: Gates Open at 6:00am on Sunday, May 29; Flag Drops at 12:19pm
Memorial Day Weekend in Indianapolis would not be complete without the Indy 500! This year marks the 100th running of one of America’s biggest sporting events, and it is expected to be bigger than ever! While the race doesn’t officially start until 12:19pm, there is plenty to see on the Speedway beforehand, including commemorative laps, military/Americana music performances (including the National Anthem by Darius Rucker), military speech and flyover, and the customary “Back Home Again in Indiana.” Tickets and more information can be found at www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com.
Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade
Where: Downtown Indianapolis
When: 12:00pm to 1:30pm on Saturday, May 28
When it comes to the Indy 500, the festivities are not limited to just the race! The day before the flag drops, there is the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade that goes through downtown Indy. This parade draws in crowds of over 300,000 and includes the Indy 500 drivers, giant balloons, marching bands, floats, celebrities, and more!
