4 Tips for Protecting Your Car From Being Stolen

According to a 20/20 program by ABC from back in 2013, nearly a million vehicles are stolen every year, with a theft happening every 43 seconds. Here are some ways to help prevent your vehicle from being stolen:
Tip #1: Always Lock Your Vehicle
This tip is basic common sense, but it is by far one of the best ways to keep your vehicle safe from theft. In fact, thieves are getting more hi-tech and have tools that will prevent remote-operated keys from locking your doors. If you have a remote-operated key, don’t be afraid the push the “lock” button a couple of times and check each door to be sure that everything is safe.
Tip #2: Never Leave Your Windows Open
We know that Indianapolis can get a little toasty in the summertime and we like to get a little airflow in our parked vehicles by leaving the windows open. Unfortunately, that is one of the best ways for thieves to enter your vehicle—even if that window is opened just a crack! So keep all of your windows rolled up!
Tip #3: Don’t Leave Your Vehicle Running
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Indianapolis can be bitingly cold during the winter and many of us have all been guilty of letting our vehicles run for a few minutes to warm it up. While there is a huge debate regarding possible benefits for your engine, we feel that doing this is not a good idea because your vehicle becomes an easy target for theft. Once you go back in the house to finish your morning coffee, someone can simply get in and drive away.
Tip #4: Never Leave Keys in Your Vehicle
It is easy for us to leave our keys in our vehicle sometimes, especially when we are at the gas station and we are close by. However, this is a prime time for thieves to just get in your vehicle and take off. Always put your keys in your pocket when you are at the pump. Also, check your vehicle over for available spare keys and remove them.
